"I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for Gran Turismo 6," said Yamauchi in the press release. Developer Polyphony Digital said the game will feature every track from Gran Turismo 5 along with courses in seven new locales, and a new "compact game engine" that will give the studio more flexibility in expanding the title with downloadable content in the future.

Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi officially announced the game there.Īccording to a press release from Sony, Gran Turismo 6 will launch with 1,200 vehicles, including all the cars that appeared in Gran Turismo 5. Last week, the official Gran Turismo website teased a reveal event being held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, U.K., today. The announcement confirms a leak from earlier today that divulged the details ahead of the company's planned reveal. "So for now, focus on enjoying the Playstation 3 version.Gran Turismo 6, the next entry in Polyphony Digital's "real driving simulator" franchise, is set for release this holiday season on PlayStation 3, publisher Sony Computer Entertainment announced today. "Around the time the players have 'played all out' and have enjoyed themselves on the Playstation 3, the Playstation 4 version of Gran Turismo might naturally come out around that time," Yamauchi told a group of reporters in a roundtable discussion after his presentation.

While Sony promises more info is to come at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, and more still two months later at Gamescom in Germany, the most curious detail about GT6 is the choice to make it a PS3 title when the PS4 launch is just around the corner.

Yamauchi describes the new mode as "chemical reactions between the real and virtual worlds." The meaning admittedly doesn't translate well, but if more manufacturers hop on board with GT6's "Edge Effects" system, it could prove as an interesting tool to improve real-world driving. And if they have the standard or custom track to match whatever they drove in real life, they can create in-game replays, or ghost cars to race in time attack mode. Yamauchi addressed this criticism directly in his presentation, assuring that GT6's interface would be "faster than GT5."Īnother interesting feature is what Polophony is calling "Edge Effects." Essentially, players who own-or have the opportunity to drive-a Toyota GT86 installed with a special ECU can upload their telemetry data to the game. Polophony also plans to redesign the game's UI, which, in previous games, critics found cumbersome, slow, and at times impenetrable. Players will be able to form their own racing clubs and organize their own racing series-all accessible from a smartphone, tablet, or PC. There will also be improved online community features. In addition to a retune of the game's mechanics, GT6 will also feature more cars (more than 1200, including the Tesla Model S and McLaren MP4-12C), more tracks (33 total, with Silverstone making its debut), and more customization parts ("several thousand" rims and aerodynamic add-ons). While it's hard to tell from that short clip how much more realistic GT6's driving physics really are, Polophony Digital's work with data from Yokohama and KW Automotive has clearly altered how the cars handle in the next iteration of Gran Turismo. While the GT5 car looked relatively tame, the GT6's had noticeable more body roll and oversteered a bit more going through the bend. Yamauchi demonstrated the differences with a short clip of Alpine A110 1600S's-one using the GT5 physics model and one with the GT6's-going around a corner at England's Silverstone circuit. Yamauchi, who's overseen Polyphony Digital's racing sim series since the original Gran Turismo was released in 1998, outlined the core improvements to GT6: an optimized game engine for smoother performance an improved graphics engine with better lighting capabilities and a revamped physics engine, including a new tire deformation model co-developed with Yokohama. The announcement came during a 15th anniversary celebration of the franchise. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, ENGLAND-Gran Turismo 6 producer Kazunori Yamauchi announced at a press conference today that the next installment of the Gran Turismo series, Gran Turismo 6, will be hitting stores this holiday season.
